ERIE, Pa. — Erie police charged a 61-year-old man with arson in connection with a fire Tuesday afternoon at St. Patrick Catholic Church.

No one was injured and no serious damage was done, police said.

Police charged Steven Quigley, who they said was living in homeless shelters in Erie. He was arraigned and placed in the Erie County Prison on $50,000 bond.

Firefighters were called to the church at 130 E. Fourth St. for a fire at the church at about 2 p.m.

“There was a gentleman in the church that started a couple fires,” said Guy Santone, chief fire investigator for the Erie Bureau of Fire. “We had the police called in and got a good description off the (church’s video) cameras,” he said.

“He started (a fire) in the money slot and took a wick and started that on fire and he was going to start other things on fire when the (church) ladies came in and scared him off.”
