House Explosion in Moon Township

A house on Convair Drive in Moon Twp exploded today just before 4pm.

The explosion occurred right after children got off a school bus, causing them to scatter.

Reports are that no one was home at the time of the explosion, and there were no injuries reported.  Two dogs were inside at the time of the explosion and they were transported to a local vet office and are believed to be in good condition.

This is the second home to explode in Moon in recent years, with one occurring in 2013 on Charlton Heights Road see article here.

The cause is under investigation.

Somerset Turnpike Plaza Accident

One person was taken to the hospital after an apparent electrical explosion in Somerset County.

County Dispatch said it happened at a service plaza near mile marker 114 on the Turnpike around 5 am.

A worker was in the mechanical room at the time of the incident.

House explodes in Moon Township

Two people were hurt Saturday when a house exploded on Charlton Heights Road in Moon Township.

Shawn Landa, 47, was inside the house when it exploded. He was flown to a hospital.

Allen Lisica, 61, was in a house next door and was taken to a local hospital.

Both men were found under piles of debris.

The explosion punched a giant hole in the house next door and knocked the chimney off that house. The chimney fell onto the house next door.

The front door of the house that blew up was blasted across the street. The house there was also heavily damaged.

The fire marshal is investigating the cause. Natural gas companies have been at the scene.

Explosion rocks ATI plant; no one injured

No one was reported injured Wednesday night in an explosion at the ATI Allegheny Ludlum plant along Route 981 in Derry Township, a company spokesman said.

The explosion was caused by water that came in contact with hot metal at the plant, ATI spokesman Daniel Greenfield said. The explosion damaged a portion of a building at the plant, Greenfield said.

The Westmoreland County Department of Public Safety received a report of the explosion shortly after 9 p.m.

Bradenville firefighters were assisted by units from Derry and Latrobe. Bradenville firefighters still were on the scene at 11 p.m.

ATI’s website states that its Latrobe facility is a specialty melting operation that has an electric arc furnace for the production of a variety of specialty alloys. The plant’s melt shop produces many of Allegheny Ludlum and ATI Allvac’s specialty and nickel alloys.

Breaking News – Explosion at Clairton Works

July 14th, 2010 – 09:40 – Clairton units have been dispatched to Clairton Works for an explosion in the B Battery with multiple personnel entrapped.  Additional EMS units have been requested to the scene.  Glassport 161 and Jefferson Hills 180 have been placed on standby.

The mill is now reporting whole B battery is on fire.

Update @10:01 – All personnel accounted for and being treated.  Medical helicopter on the way for a 55 year old with burns to the chest, head, and back.  Fire appears to be out.
