Erie Garage Destroyed After Morning Fire

Erie, PA – Fire crews worked much of the mid morning hours on a garage fire at 5144 Old French Road. Smoke from the blaze could be seen for miles around. It is believed there are some automobiles inside along with auto parts that could be contributing to the dark smoke billowing from the structure.

Immediate concern was containing the fire to the garage so no adjoining structures would also catch fire. Crews appear to be successful in that fight but the garage looks to be a total loss.

Erie Fire Department crews remain on the scene. Old French Road road was closed for a period of time while the fire departments worked on the blaze.

Fire Destroys Millcreek Township Garage, 2 Cars, Motorcycle, and Mobile Camper

A Millcreek garage fire at 1173 E. Arlington Road destroyed three cars and a motor home just after 1am Saturday morning.

The Trudeau’s woke up to find their two-story detached garage engulfed in flames.

“Our daughter woke us up, she said the garage was burning. Then we came out here and it was really burning,” said Richard Trudeau.

Wind fueling the fire put the houses on both sides at risk.

“Wind is the reason for the exposure trouble, it was fanning the fire,” said Belle Valley fire chief Chris Altadonna.

“The flames were pretty high and the smoke was the darkest smoke that I’ve ever seen. You could tell the wind was just catching it,” said Cathy Reese, a neighbor of the Trudeau’s.

The garage held two cars and a motorcycle. Right next to it parked a camper. All the gas in those vehicles also fueled the flames.

In near 90-degree heat, firefighters from nine companies contended with a fast-moving garage fire in Allegheny Township fueled by drums of used heating oil and other flammable liquids being stored there along with vehicles and auto parts.

The large, two-story garage at 516 McGeary Hollow Road was destroyed.

No one was injured.

The fire broke out at about 2:10 p.m. Flames were through the roof by the time crews arrived, according to Markle fire Chief Keith Wilhelm. Firefighters were still dousing hot spots more than two hours later.

There were at least four explosions while crews were battling the blaze, Wilhelm said.

It appeared that the fire started on the second floor and burned down to ground level, he said.

A state police fire marshal is investigating.
